The first official trailer for Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller Ready Player One is here, and it looks like a giant treasure hunt through the immersive video game of our hopes and dreams.

Set in a dystopian future where everyone seems to live in stacked-up caravans in Ohio, Ready Player One seems to rely on the premise that an entire generation of young people would choose the heady thrills of an immersive virtual reality world to escape the depressive reality of day-to-day life. Which is probably fair.

Based on the Ernest Cline novel of the same name, the trailer confirms that the movie will centre around a high-stakes treasure hunt designed by the mad genius of the virtual universe, in which our hero Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), competes to win a billion dollars and to escape his depressing and probably structurally unsafe tower of vans.

While incredibly shiny and ultra-futuristic in presentation, the movie is packed full of nostalgia for the eighties and video-game culture in general, plus a general smattering of pop culture. At one point, a King Kong type is flouncing around. If you go through the trailer, you’ll find dozens of Easter Egg references to video game, TV and other nerdy franchises.

Ready Player One hits cinemas March 30 2018. You can watch the trailer here, and enjoy some sweet Van Halen as the soundtrack:
