Good news, true crime weirdos! It looks like Quentin Tarantino is putting together a new film about the Manson Family murders. The Hollywood Reporter has this morning announced the director has penned a script and is now tapping A-listers including Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence.

Though full plot details are still pretty scarce, one part of the story is said to centre on murder victim Sharon Tate. Tate was an actress and model who was killed in 1969. Members of the Manson family entered her LA home and repeatedly stabbed her and a friend, Jay Sebring, to death. She was heavily pregnant at the time. Both her fame and brutal death catapulted the story into infamy.

Tarantino regulars Harvey and Bob Weinstein are reportedly on board for the project, but sources claim Jennifer Lawrence isn’t considering the role of Tate. It’s not yet clear what role is being pitched for Pitt (though the actor did have a stand-out turn in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was coming back for more).

If this all goes ahead, it would be an interesting move for the cult director. Tarantino has never made a film based on real-life events, let alone a story that’s so well-worn in popular culture.

The Manson murders have been retold and picked apart in countless works including Helter Skelter (based on the best-selling book by prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi), the 1973 documentary Manson, NBC’s recent series Aquarius and much more. The crimes have been the focus of weird stop-motion animations and Simpsons episodes. Constant allusions to the murders sent Mad Men fans theorising down a rabbit hole for years.

Though Tarantino definitely has a reputation for picking apart genre and tropes, he’s not exactly known for his sensitivities. It’ll be interesting to see what happens when/if he throws his hat into the realm of true crime.
