To those who say porn can’t be educational, we humbly present the greatest collection of data to hit 2018 so far: Pornhub’s 2017 Year In Review.

Every year, in addition to several petabytes of porn (1 petabyte = 1 million gigabytes, fyi), Pornhub releases a list detailing the year’s NSFW trends. They are, in a word, enlightening — did you know that Pornhub receives 28.5 billion visits each year? Or that more people voted on Pornhub videos last year than in the US Presidential election?

Or what about the fact that it would take 68 years of continuous porn viewing to watch all the new porn uploaded in 2017? Or the fact that every 5 minutes, Pornhub transmits more data than the entire contents of the New York Public Library, which contains 50 million books?

The Year in Review, which you can view here (while it discusses categories of porn, the page itself isn’t explicit at all), is full of gems like that, and then some, all illustrated with beautiful infographics. See for example this one, which reveals that the top three trending porn searches last year were “porn for women”, “Rick and Morty”, and, uh, “fidget spinners”. Meanwhile, “cuckold” was the category with the biggest increase in views (up 72%).

To be clear, they’re the top three trends, not the top three searches overall (“lesbian” still takes the cake, the only place in the world we’re overrepresented), but they’re still wild.

Also wild are the stats on what causes people to stop watching porn. Pornhub use dips every time there’s a big event on TV like the Golden Globes, but also during the Great British Bakeoff, which saw Pornhub traffic from the UK drop by 3%. The Big Bang Theory Premiere also saw traffic drop off by 5%, and, amusingly, Apple’s iPhone X Launch caused Pornhub traffic on Apple mobile devices to drop by a staggering 12%. Priorities.

People watching porn on their phones turned out to be a huge chunk of Pornhub users, actually. 67% of all Pornhub traffic came from smartphones in 2017, which explains what everyone’s doing with those expensive data-heavy phone plans.

Australia, meanwhile, had a few interesting stats of its own. We’re the 8th highest source of Pornhub traffic, despite being only the 53rd largest country by population. That makes us pretty much one of the horniest countries per capita.

Aussies spend around 9 minutes and 51 seconds on an average visit to Pornhub, which is slightly less than the global average. And we still love lesbian porn, while massage porn has apparently fallen out of favour. Oh, and outdoor porn is also 24% more popular in Australia than other countries. Make of that what you will.

Anyway, you can peruse the stats for yourself over at Pornhub, whatever device you feel comfortable with. Unless you’re one of the 11% of computer-users still watching porn via Internet Explorer. At least switch to the more aptly-named Microsoft Edge.
