Perfect Human Mahershala Ali Just Gave Hiatus Kaiyote A Huge Shoutout
Just when we thought we couldn't love him any harder.
We really didn’t need another reason to love Mahershala Ali, but he’s gone and given us one anyway.
A couple of weeks back the American actor gave an extensive interview to GQ magazine, in which he discussed fame, fatherhood, faith, and the brutal realities of navigating modern American as a black man. It’s a brilliant read and if you haven’t checked it out yet, you need to sort that out immediately.
On top of the interview, Ali also gifted GQ with a playlist of his ultimate summer jams. The 16-song list features cuts like knxwledge’s ‘time&tide’, Stevie Wonder’s ‘Hey Love’, Erykah Badu’s ‘My People’ and Childish Gambino’s meme-worthy ‘Redbone’.
He also gave mad love to one of our own, throwing in Hiatus Kaiyote’s Grammy-nominated 2013 track ‘Nakamarra’.
The Melbourne band have already copped some serious international love this year. Their 2015 track ‘Building A Ladder’ was sampled on not one, but two of the year’s biggest releases: on the intro of Drake’s More Life and on Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. track ‘DUCKWORTH’.
Metallica’s James Hetfield shouted Hiatus Kaiyote’s praises just last week — revealing that his kids had alerted him to the Melbourne outfit, and that he thought their stuff was “out there”, “wacky”, and seriously cool.
Clearly you’re onto a good thing when both Mahershala Ali and Metallica love your music. Check out Ali’s playlist and accompanying vid below.
