National Geographic‘s Paul Rose recently led an exhibition to the Seychelles, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean that lies 1500 km east of South East Africa.

The aim of the exhibition was to “find, survey, and help protect the last wild places in the ocean”. Which is all well and good for the Seychelles in general, but kind of a piss-off for the horny Aldabran tortoises that live therein.

Like this one, who weighed close to 660 pounds and pursued Rose and his camera man on what Rose correctly calls “a ludicrous, disconcerting, low-speed chase”.

“I assumed that he would get close and then back off once he realized that he was up against two wonderful specimens at the top of the food chain,” Rose says. “But there was absolutely no stopping him—he got close, very close, close enough that his snorting and spitting plus the look in his enraged eyes above his snapping powerful beak made us retreat in a panic.”
