Joaquin Phoenix + Wolverine sideburns = much recommend.

I don’t often say “damn, this looks like a sweet movie”, but after watching the trailer for upcoming offbeat crime-drama-comedy thing Inherent Vice I feel entirely comfortable saying damn, this looks like a pretty sweet movie. Based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Thomas Pynchon, Inherent Vice tells the story of a private investigator in ’70s Los Angeles trying to unpick a plot to put a billionaire in a mental home. It’s being directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the guy behind There Will Be Blood, Magnolia and Boogie Nights, so my confidence that this will be a pretty sweet movie only grows.

Besides all that, the trailer is just fresh to death. Joaquin Phoenix with Wolverine sideburns? Owen Wilson in Hansel-from-Zoolander mode? Josh Brolin in a suit? Benicio del Toro doing anything? Reese Witherspoon doing anything? In the ’70s? Is this a beautiful dream?

I want this movie to get in my eyes and nest there like a little bird.

Inherent Vice is out January 2015.
