Memes do not die. We might forget about them, live out the rest of our lives as humans, and finally turn to dust, but memes are immortal in a way none of us truly grasp. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the case of Harambe, The Gorilla That Died But Not Really Because Now He’s Online Forever.

For anyone who’s been living under a rock without wifi for the past 12 months, Harambe was infamously shot dead by zookeepers at Cincinnati Zoo on his seventeenth birthday, after a child fell into his enclosure. The story soon went viral, as the global media debated the staff’s decision to kill the captive animal in order to protect the child.

Naturally, jokers on the internet ate that shit up.

The incident inspired so much nonsense it is practically impossible to keep track of, from Harambe merchandise to memorials to mayoral runs to that goddamn Harambe cheeto selling for close to $130,000.

WHO DID THIS?!?!

Now, one year since the People’s Gorilla was killed, the internet is, well, see, here’s the thing folks: the internet is back at it again.

Please note this one truly insane meme (and blatant attempt to recruit new members) from the Greens.

The Greens meme. The Gremes. The meme on The Gremes’ actual goddamn website.

What the hell is going on here? Do we watch the whole video? Is there a prize involved?!

So there you have it, everyone. One year since some zookeepers were forced to make an unspeakably difficult decision, we the internet get to have a good old belly laugh at them for it.

Vale Harambe, the silverback gorilla who, while dead, will sadly never rest in peace.
