News Corp Has Announced It’s Shutting Down mX: A Nation Mourns
"I guess now that mX is gone, we'll have to create huge piles of garbage at train stations on our own."
Today marks a dark day in public transport history as we bid farewell to mX. Since 2001, the newspaper has accompanied us on late-night train rides, protected us from stained seats, and helped find love for possibly tens of people in the Here’s Looking At You section.
This afternoon a News Corp spokesperson confirmed the news to Mumbrella and said there would be two more weeks of circulation. “The decision is a reflection of the changing reading habits of commuters who now turn to their mobile phones and tablets on their way to and from work.”
The loss of a publication and the resultant job cuts is never a good thing, but with even their own Wikipedia page throwing shade at the calibre of “legitimate” news reported in mX, the response to the axing has been mixed.
Some are feeling genuinely saddened and are offering their condolences:
MX closing is sad day for all the people who will lose their jobs.

They're stopping printing of @mX? How sad :(

Odd that Murdoch's train station freebie @MX closes due to small losses, but airport freebie @Australian stays open while losing $15m a year

Sad day for @mX , the paper that taught me to write a short, sharp news story without the waffle.

Others are feeling slightly less glum:
Goodbye my lover, goodbye my friend. You have been the one, you have been the one for me @mX
— Jordan Lo Russo (@jordan_lorusso) May 28, 2015
I am sad that MX is going because all the people on public transport who think i am HOT (Chatswood line) won't be able to send me a message

rip mX, a newspaper that I frequently used to create a barrier between my feet and the train seat in front of me. u will be missed

… and others have more practical considerations on their mind:
without mx what will our commuters use to cover up the vomit of the guy in the corner who’s munted at 10am
— mundo (@menendymendez) May 28, 2015
how will we find out what amusing things have been overheard on public transport without mX *checks twitter dot com* oh right good carry on
— Rupert H (@rpy) May 28, 2015
The Mx is being axed?! But how will strangers be creepy to other strangers without Here's Looking At You? What's that? Tinder? Ok, phew

Mumbrella are reporting that the newspaper’s last edition will be published on June 12.
