Feeling down about the postal survey? Just want some nice pro-gay content delivered to you in soothing Kiwi accents? Then check out this cheeky New Zealand ad, which aims to discourage people from using the phrase “that’s so gay” to react to negative events like dropping your delicious pie before you get a chance to take a bite.

Yeah, that’s right — New Zealand’s working on making sure people aren’t accidentally homophobic. Meanwhile in Australia a good chunk of the country is still stuck actively opposing the basic human rights of LGBTQI+ people. We’re not saying New Zealand’s perfect, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t just google flight costs as my boss leaned over and said approvingly: “New Zealand — it’s like Australia, but woke”.

Anyway, the ad itself, which was published on Facebook a few days ago by LGBTQI+ youth support service RainbowYouth, is part of an upcoming national ad campaign that will feature on TV and radio across NZ. It opens with something deeply relatable: the high drama of a bloke dropping his pie just as he’s about to bite into it.

“Aw, gay,” he murmurs, mourning said pie, only to stopped by a righteous bystander.

“Actually, Nigel, that’s not gay at all. It’s deeply disappointing, but it’s not gay.”

“Eh?” says Nigel, trembling on the cusp of newfound wokeness.

The righteous bystander then seals the deal with this immortal line: “Look bro, unless that pie is a man who loves another man, then it’s not gay.”

The ad gets better from there, but it’s at its most profound with Kiwi accents, so we’re going to let you experience it for yourself below. It may seem like it’s not a huge deal, but as RainbowYouth point out, it addresses “something small that contributes to much larger issues — homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.”

Please watch it, and then share it with that mate who keeps dropping the phrase “that’s so gay” every time they experience mild misfortune. Oh, and post your postal survey response!! Do it now.
