A Few Reasons Why That Dumb Music Festival Poster You’ve Seen Doing The Rounds Isn’t Real

There’s nothing punters love more than an unverified poster doing the rounds on social media that promises the summer festival line-up of your dreams.

Meet ‘That Festival’, the hottest new event in WA’s Margaret River, brought to you by MTV, Subway, KFC and triple j. The 2020 (yes, it’s in 2020) summer festival boasts a line-up featuring Sticky Fingers, Rage Against The Machine, Arctic Monkeys and Violent Soho. Hit that mf like button!

A mocked up poster for ‘That Festival’ was shared by WA local Corey Ablett to triple j’s Facebook page yesterday. It’s racked up nearly nearly 3,000 likes and over 2,000 comments. While a lot of people have been expressing a healthy amount of scepticism about the alleged festival, it seems like there are more than a few keen legends who think there’s a solid chance it’s real.

Here’s a few of the comments:

“If this is fake I will cry”

“Pls don’t be fake”

“Let’s do it!”

“2020 here we come!”

“If this is real holy molyyyyyy”

“Margaret river here Jacko and his Lux fkn comeeee”

“Whaaaat is this, clear the diary for Feb 2020”

“Sticky Fingers?!?!?!?”

It seems obvious to us the poster, the line-up and the entire festival is just a cheeky prank. But, to be fair, there are a couple of key elements to it that might fool people into thinking it’s the real deal. To help end the confusion, here’s a list of reasons why the poster is fake.

Here’s Why It’s Fake

The festival is supposedly being held in 2020. No one books a festival that far in advance. You can’t lock in talent nearly three years ahead of schedule, who knows whether they’ll still be performing or available then

There are typos everywhere. Dope Leomon? Lyall Molene? Royal Bloods? Come on folks, at least spellcheck your fake posters.

Some of the bands don’t exist anymore. T-Rex, who have third billing on the poster, are an English band who stopped performing in 1977 after their lead singer died in a car crash. They aren’t reforming for ‘That Festival’. And as much as I would Rage Against The Machine to tour again, they aren’t.

The sponsors. I can’t believe it needs to be said but Subway and KFC are not sponsoring summer music festivals.

The date doesn’t make sense. The festival is apparently being held on February 12, 2020. That’s a Wednesday. You don’t hold a music festival on a Wednesday.

The name. It’s called ‘That Festival’, ffs.

Violent Soho told us it was fake. Yeah look, even though we knew it was fake we thought it was the right thing to do to reach out to the artists apparently involved and check anyway. Violent Soho’s manager confirmed to us that it was definitely a fake gig but added “I love how high we are billed though!”.

Here’s Why It Could Be Real

Even though we’ve now comprehensively established the poster is fake, there is one extremely compelling reason that suggests it could be a real line-up for a real Australian music festival.

There are no women on it.
