The world’s most livable city is teetering on the edge of the abyss, with the thin blue line between order and chaos walking off the job. Dozens of city parking inspectors are on strike until Monday, as part of an ongoing dispute with the City of Melbourne. Seriously, it’s like we’re living in a real life version of The Purge up in here.

The work ban has been in place since Thursday, and is expected to last the entire weekend. According to The Age, the industrial action relates to employee dissatisfaction with redundancy and disciplinary provisions, as well as the overall pay gap between senior executives and other staff.

Before you go parking your car just anywhere, however, it’s worth noting that not all the inspectors are on strike.  According to the Australian Services Union, around eight of the usual 60 rostered inspectors will still be issuing fines.

“We can’t guarantee that people won’t get a fine” said union spokesperson Ty Lockwood. “It’s up to commuters in the city if they abide by the law.”

A spokesperson for the City of Melbourne told The Age that the council was “disappointed” by the strike, and said that “motorists should continue to abide by parking restrictions.” Hey, may as well be optimistic, right?
