Melbourne Comedian Ronny Chieng Just Scored A Correspondent Gig On The New-Look ‘Daily Show’

Probably won't get to see him do student stand-up at Melbourne Uni anymore ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Trevor Noah’s getting ready to finally park his butt in the Daily Show chair, and while he’s been at pains to emphasise that nothing is going to change, some things are definitely going to change.

Notably, three new comedians are joining the Daily Show correspondents roster — LA comic Desi Lydic, Alabama native Roy Wood Jr. and Melbourne-based stand-up and actor Ronny Chieng, whose career has gone from doing uni comedy to being a fucking Daily Show correspondent in just four years, in case you weren’t feeling unproductive enough today already.

In the interim, he’s developed some serious comedic chops — last year he won the Directors’ Choice award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Best Show award at the Sydney Comedy Festival, and opened for Dave Chappelle on his Australian tour.

Born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and raised in New Hampshire and Singapore, Chieng moved to Melbourne ten years ago to study commerce and law at Melbourne University.

In slightly less great news, the gig means Chieng’s had to cancel half a dozen Australian shows on his You Don’t Know What You’re Talking About tour. Happily, though, ticket holders for all the cancelled shows will be contacted by ticketing outlets and given refunds. The cancelled shows are below:

Perth: Regal Theatre, Friday October 9

Darwin: Entertainment Centre, Friday October 16

Geelong: GPAC, Thursday October 22

Bendigo: Capital Theatre, Friday October 23

Newcastle: Civic, Saturday October 31

Brisbane: Powerhouse, Saturday November 7

The Daily Show will return in the US on September 28.
