We here at Junkee tend to get pretty excited over fabulous animals that can’t possibly exist and yet somehow do. Just a fortnight ago we were singing the praises of the wondrous stubby squid, in the vain hope that perhaps he would want to become our best friend.

Still waiting for your call Stubby. Schedule’s wide open.

We Need To Discuss The ‘Stubby Squid’, A Creature That Is Real And Definitely Not A Cartoon

But while our cephalopod pal will always been number one in our hearts, it turns out he’s far from the only magical creature roaming the ocean’s depths. As it happens, we stumbled across another one just today, in the form of Pinky the Dolphin, who is a dolphin who is pink.

While we’re still coming to terms with the existence of such an incredible creature, Pinky has actually been swimming around out there for a while. She was first spotted as a baby back in 2007 on Louisiana’s Calcasieu River by boat captain Erik Rue, who’s been keeping an eye on her ever since.

“We still see her swimming almost every day in the summertime.” Rue told a local news station recently. “We’ve seen her a lot in the last few weeks. She looks happy and healthy.”

The prevailing theory around Pinky’s colour is that she’s an albino. The truth, though, is that nobody is really 100 per cent sure. That’s just part of Pinky’s mystique.

In any case, her unusual pigment certainly hasn’t done any damage to her love life, with Rue telling reporters that Pinky is pretty popular with the male dolphins, and that he has even witnessed her mating. Pinky has so far been unable to fall pregnant, although apparently not for lack of trying.
