Triple j breakfast hosts Matt Okine and Alex Dyson paid an unexpected visit to a high school in Melbourne today, where they had some big news for a member of the student body.

18-year-old Princess Hill Secondary College student Gretta Ray had just been chosen as the winner of the Unearthed High competition. But rather than let her know, say, over the phone, Matt and Alex thought they’d try something a little bit more exciting.

“I feel so good, and so blown away, and so overwhelmed at the same time, and so excited,” Ray told the ABC.

Unearthed music director Dave Ruby Howe said that the Year 12 student was a “bold and exciting new talent who seems to win over everyone that comes into orbit of her music.”

Ray took down the competition with her song ‘Drive’, beating out more than 1,000 other entries by high school acts from all around the country. She released her first EP, Elsewhere, earlier in the year, and will now get the chance to record a song with the help of triple j.
