Earlier this afternoon, Malcolm Bligh Turnbull met Governor-General Peter Cosgrove at Government House in Canberra, took the oath of office, and was officially sworn in as Australia’s 29th Prime Minister. For both Turnbull and the nation, it was an historic occasion. The culmination of a life’s ambition; the latest chapter in a years-long saga of instability and disruption in Australia’s highest office; and the start of what could prove to be a markedly different government from the one that came before.

But Malcolm’s long-awaited moment in the sun has been dimmed, perhaps forever, by the emergence of another member of the Turnbull clan at his swearing-in. Malcolm’s grandson Jack has vaulted to national prominence, stealing the limelight in what was meant to be his granddad’s finest hour and laying a solid claim for a possible future tilt at the Liberal leadership himself.

Jack’s remarks can be heard throughout Malcolm’s swearing in, which you can watch below courtesy of the ABC.

“Bub, bub,” Jack began as Cosgrove invited Malcolm to take the oath of office. It was a sign of what was to come.

As the new Prime Minister struggled to recite the oath — “I, Malcolm Bligh Turnbull, do swear that I will well and truly serve the people of Australia” — his grandson continued to offer up remarks of his own, notable among them: “duh duh dah, duh duh dah,” “werrrrr,” and “nnnnnn”. As was undoubtedly his plan, his interruptions didn’t go unnoticed by the Canberra press gallery.

In spite of his descendant’s relentless undermining, Prime Minister Turnbull then took Jack in his arms for the official photoshoot in the courtyard outside. Even there, Jack couldn’t hide his clear intent to white-ant his grandpa, which he accomplished by pulling some truly spectacular faces.

This kid is a political maestro.

Jack pls

While Jack will probably bide his time for at least a few weeks before making his move, the clock is ticking. Malcolm is Garrett Walker to Jack’s Frank Underwood. It’s only a matter of time before Jack for PM fever is sweeping the nation.
