Kevin Rudd Talking To His Cat Mei Mei May Be The Strangest Thing You See Today

Kevin, please don't ever say: "pussycat".

Kevin Rudd lives in New York, in a swanky apartment on the Upper East Side that he shares with his wife. He also shares this apartment with two cats, Qing Qing (not pictured) and Mei Mei. These cats are named after the wives of two famous Chinese politicians, presumably so Kevin Rudd can bring up the fact that he can speak Mandarin. In case you don’t know, it’s super hard to learn Mandarin. Super hard.

In his beautiful apartment, which is warmly lit and filled with the faint clang of cooking sounds (Roast beef? Duck à l’orange?) Kevin Rudd is trying to read some paperwork. From his plush chair, he cranes his neck and says: “Pussycat, this is really not comfy.”

And so, the one-sided conversation between Kevin Rudd and his “pussycat” (yeauccchhhhh!) Mei Mei, begins.

What is it about this video that is so disconcerting? Is it the way Kevin Rudd smugly relishes talking to a fat cat who can’t talk back (you’re a long way from Canberra now, Ruddy! Woo, woo — I don’t know)? Is it that he is holding a conversation with an actual cat? Is it that he thinks this cat can also read his paperwork? Is it that he thought this video was good enough to put on social media (on the same day that this video went on social media)? Is it that someone is actually filming this whole thing? A second cat? Qing Qing?

Who knows. I only know two things for certain: Kevin Rudd is certainly leading the lifestyle that he always dreamed of, and no, that cat will not move.
