Over in the US, pilot season is in full swing, which means for every Brooklyn 99 that’s cancelled, there’s the shiny silver lining of a potential new fave. Right on schedule, Josh Thomas has emerged with a new TV show of his very own.

Called Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, the show is created, written by and stars Thomas himself — just like his critically acclaimed show Please Like Me, which last year was officially cancelled after its devastatingly short fourth season.

Before you get too excited, it’s only been commissioned for a pilot by US TV channel Freeform, which currently airs Grown-ish and… not a whole lot else to get excited about, honestly.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay follows Nicholas (played by Thomas), a 25-year-old who still lives at home with his dad and two teenage half-sisters, one of whom is autistic. Their father becomes terminally ill, and soon Nicholas has to step up and help manage not only their father’s last days, but the everyday duties of keeping a family afloat.

For the record, the show’s billed as a comedy, but, of course, so was Please Like Me, which included it’s fair share of heartache. Thomas has tweeted that just as Please Like Me was praised for its nuanced, thoughtful depiction of mental illness, he hopes Everything’s Gonna Be Okay will bring a similar level of care to depicting autism and terminal illness

The show is among a few high-profile pilots also commissioned by Freeform, including the reboot of UK sci-fi teen drama Misfits and a spin-off of Pretty Little Liars.

For now, that’s more or less what we know. Thankfully, a fan has wrestled one more fundamental piece of information: yes, the show will feature The Gays.
