In the past year John Oliver has rewritten the possibilities of political comedy, set the internet on fire on a weekly basis, and had so many “John Oliver Just Absolutely Destroyed X” headlines written about him future generations will probably assume he was a rampaging supervillain.

In between doing all that Oliver still likes to do some stand-up where and when he can, but he’s historically focused on building his presence in the US since moving there in 2006. But finally — finally — his stand-up tour is coming to Australia for the first time in August.

Oliver’s increasingly taken an interest in Australian nonsense affairs over the last couple of years, particularly in Tony Abbott, who he describes as “a car crash of a human being” and “like a star imploding”; his LWT bit on Abbott from last year is still glorious to watch.

Abbott’s probably not the only one who should be worried, though — last time he was out here he dubbed Australia one of the most “comfortably racist” nations around, which was a little too close to home for a lot of people, if not stating the obvious for a lot of others. With a dedicated stand-up set, there are probably gonna be a few more home truths dropped this time round.
