This morning saw the release of the latest feverishly anticipated instalment in the life of the world’s most famous boy wizard middle-aged wizard. Hitting shelves at 9am AEST this morning around the world, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is actually the printed script from the stage play of the same name, which had its gala premiere in London Saturday night. It concerns a now adult Harry and his relationship with his youngest son.

While it may not be a full-blown novel, or even written by J.K. Rowling (though she contributed to the story, the script is penned by playwright Jack Thorne), that didn’t stop the fans from turning out in droves. Dymocks reportedly pre-sold a whopping 15,000 copies, while at Readings in Melbourne we saw lines of costumed wizards stretching around the block. Several children had to be removed from the line by their parents after becoming too excited, and at this time we can neither confirm nor deny whether any Junkee staff members were among them.

Hopefully Potterheads enjoy the wonderment while they can, since Rowling has now officially confirmed that Cursed Child will be the final Harry Potter story. “He goes on a very big journey during these two plays and then, yeah, I think we’re done,” the author said at the play’s London premiere. “This is the next generation, you know. So, I’m thrilled to see it realised so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now.”

So there you go. Raise your wands. Magic is officially dead.
