It Looks Like Nicolas Cage Runs The NSA In The Full Trailer For Oliver Stone’s ‘Snowden’

Yeaaaaaah, I wouldn't have much faith in it either.

There are plenty of serious discussion to be had around Oliver Stone’s upcoming political thriller on Edward Snowden. With public opinion still so divided on the NSA whistleblower, will it ultimately work to valorise or criticise him? And, more than that, what will it say about the issue of national security at large? The film is due to be released just a couple of months out from the US election and is sure to ignite talks around terrorism and government surveillance once more.

More than that, there’s Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s performance to consider. Portraying someone in a biopic while they’re still alive is always a tough gig — does he do it justice? He’s donating his fee for the film to fund a series of short films about democracy in the digital age — he’s clearly committed to the role, even if he does kind of come off sounding like Kermit the Frog.

But, instead of all of that, I would like you to turn your attention solely to Nicolas Cage’s appearance in the trailer which just dropped online this morning. It’s short. Just a few seconds really. Yet, with this fleeting glimpse of him standing in front of a bald eagle-coated plaque which reads “DEFENDERS OF OUR FREEDOM” and very matter of factly telling Joseph Gordon-Levitt to “find the terrorist in the internet haystack”, I am entirely convinced of the worth and quality of this film.

Snowden will be in US cinemas from September 16. An Australian release date is yet to be announced.
