It's the biggest coke sale in Kings Cross since last Friday night.

It’s one of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks but it’s headed for the same resting place as Kings Cross’ nightlife: the dustbin of history. The famous Coca-Cola billboard has been taken down, dismantled and will be sold letter-by-letter at on auction that kicks off tonight.

The sign is located on the corner of Williams Sreett and Darlinghurst Road in the heart of the Cross. It’s been up since 1972 and has promoted Coke (not that it needs much promotion in Kings Cross… zing) for the last 40 years, except for a period in 2004 where it advertised Halo 2, of all things.

It’s a core part of Sydney’s history. Back in the day when people used to actually go out in the Cross (before the infamous lockout laws destroyed the local clubbing scene) it was a regular meeting place. Text your mates, see who’s keen and tell them to meet ya under the big Coke sign. I’m already tearing up just thinking about the good old days.

In 2015 the sign was taken down as part of a refurbishment to replace the 1,200 red and white neon light tubes with more energy efficient bulbs. Now you have a chance to own a bit of Sydney history and bid on sections of the old sign. All the money raised will be donated to the local Wayside Chapel charity.

The auction kicks off tonight at 8pm and will run for a week. Each letter will be listed for $100 but is likely to go for a lot more than that. You can have a crack on eBay here. Good luck!
