It’s been more than two years since we first heard Twin Peaks was coming back. Then David Lynch pulled out of the project. Then it wasn’t clear what was happening at all. Then there were campaigns to get him back. Then he said he was back in. Then the log lady died. Then Kyle McLaughlin stopped tweeting so much and everything felt a bit hopeless — like we actually never get these new episodes and would instead float in this surreal nostalgia-soaked purgatory forever.

But we have good news, weirdos. Today you finally have something official to hold on to. During a Television Critics Association panel, Showtime President David Nevins has just announced the date of the premiere: May 21. “I can finally confirm, it’s really happening,” he said. “Twin Peaks will premiere Sunday, May 21 at 9pm with a two-hour premiere.”

In Australia, the series is exclusive to Stan. The first episode will be available online immediately following its US premiere and the same time every week thereafter.

Nevins also announced that there will be 18 episodes all up and the series is “designed to be a close-ended one-time event”. The third and fourth episodes will be available online immediately after the second episode airs which, oh boy, means that’s a week you definitely shouldn’t miss.

“The thing about Twin Peaks, and this new version of Twin Peaks, is it rewards close watching,” he said. “It was [the] original social media discussion show before the tools of fan engagement really existed. That’s one reason why David is so particular about secrecy. It will really reward close watching and putting things together over time.”

Nevins also added that he’s now seen the whole thing and thinks hardcore fans will not be disappointed. “David Lynch is one of the great film masters of my lifetime. The version of Twin Peaks you’re going to see is the pure heroin version of David Lynch”.
