Did you know he owned an island?

Ethan Hawke is currently on the promotional trail for his new movie, Before Midnight — the third installment in Richard Linklater’s epic love story following wordy backpackers Jesse and Celine through romantic jaunts in Vienna, Paris and the Greek Isles. As celebrities are wont to do these days, he dropped by for a session of Reddit’s infamous Ask Me Anything overnight, and the results were pretty entertaining.

Unlike Woody Harrelson, who became internet despised last year when he made the mistake of only answering questions about the movie that he was currently promoting (and not, say, that question from one Redditor about the time Woody crashed his prom and deflowered his best friend Roseanna and never called her back) , Hawke happily took the site’s M.O. to heart, and thoughtfully answered questions on, well, anything, including Dead Poets Society, River Phoenix, a Kurt Vonnegut audio book he once did, his love of Elvis and Conor Oberst (!), lots of stuff about Gattaca, and more specific things like “How scary is Phillip Seymour Hoffman in real life?”. Oh, and he even typed this: “My name is Ethan Hawke and I’m not a meth head”.

The highlight, though, came when one well-informed Redditor asked Hawke to wax lyrical on the finer points of island ownership, seeing as ETHAN HAWKE OWNS AN ISLAND.

“I own an 8 acre island off the coast of Nova Scotia; there are eagles, and seals, and raccoons, and pine trees for days…” began Hawke, also pointing out that “a closet in Manhattan costs more than an island in Nova Scotia… I just need a few henchmen. Apply on Craigslist.”

This is what Ethan Hawke looks like on a boat. It's as close to an island pic as we could find.

For fans of Hawke, or fans of internet events that get behind the facade of celebrity nonsense, or fans who are just really passionate about Gattaca, it’s a pretty enjoyable read. Check out the whole thing here.

In other Ethan Hawke-related news, the internet just dropped the first trailer for his upcoming thriller, Getaway, also starring Selena Gomez and an evil Jon Voight, which is nothing at all like the Steve McQueen classic, but features plenty of scenes of Ethan Hawke driving quickly through Europe and yelling frantically into a mobile phone. You’ll love this movie if you watched Phone Booth and said, “This is great! But I wish the phone booth moved.”
