On Monday last week, Women’s Day did what Women’s Day does and started a meaningless and condescending rumour based pretty much on nothing.

Woman’s Day can exclusively reveal [Prince Harry and Emma Watson] are having secret dates with each other and are getting to know each other quite well,” reads the excerpt. Apparently the Prince heard the Women’s Goodwill Ambassador for the UN had split up with her boyfriend, and sent an email offering to “get to know her” — an exciting prospect for a whole swathe of the internet that apparently didn’t read the next line: “Although 12 other friends went along too to make Emma feel a little more comfortable, the pair hit it off!”

Most outlets around their web smashed their eyes shut and galloped headfirst into the re-reporting-a-rumour mill, because there’s nothing more fun than assigning value to powerful women via speculations about who they may or may not be dating. On the other side of the web, competing tabloids like US Weekly made it clear that they would only tolerate fake rumours if they originated from US Weekly, while Huffington Post called it “the best piece of fanfic we’ve read today” — but that didn’t stop the internet from losing its mind.

Which is why Watson took to twitter overnight, and shut that shit down.

That link clicks through to a clip from Cuaron’s 1995 film, A Little Princess. Nawwwww.
