Elton John’s love of our fair country is already well documented, but now the relationship appears to be getting serious.

The UK legend has used the latest episode of his Beats 1 radio show to highlight his favourite new Aussie tunes, featuring tracks from Winston Surfshirt, The Babe Rainbow, Angus & Julia Stone, and Alex The Astronaut. He even dubbed the hour-long show ‘Spotlight On Australia’.

“I don’t know what it is with Australia at the moment, but they keep producing the most fantastic music, and the artists keep getting younger and younger and younger,” Elton gushed. “Here’s a girl called Alex The Astronaut, and it’s called ‘Not Worth Hiding’. The lyrics are fabulous… it’s wonderful.”

Damn high praise from the man with songs like ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road’, ‘Tiny Dancer’ and ‘Candle In The Wind’ to his name.

Alex The Astronaut was duly chuffed too: “He’s such an inspiring character and it’s so amazing that he takes the time to listen to and support new artists,” she wrote on Facebook in response to the shoutout. “What a superstar.”

Sir Elton is currently in the middle of a massive Australian tour, with shows in Hobart, Cairns, and the Yarra Valley remaining. Tickets sold out yonks ago, but you can read our review of the Wollongong show here.
