Britney Spears’ New Album Is Here! Because It’s 2016, Let’s Celebrate With Carpool Karaoke

It's extremely fun and aggressively nostalgic.

Britney Spears’ new album Glory dropped this morning and, by all accounts, it’s a whole lot of fun. Writing for The Daily Beast, Kevin Fallon described it as “her best album in over a decade”. Over at Vanity Fair, Josh Deboff offered similar praise, comparing it to “an afternoon at the aquarium with three friends from childhood you haven’t seen in a while”. “It’s three straight rounds of margaritas at after-work drinks with your favourite co-worker,” he wrote. “It’s a solo train ride with an attractive stranger sitting across the aisle.”

Which… yeah. I guess that is all good!

This is a welcome turn for Spears who’s long been regarded as one of the most divisive and complex figures in pop culture. Glory is her first album since 2013’s Britney Jean and it’s coming with a whole lot of extra exposure. An unauthorised Lifetime biopic is on its way; she’s slotted in for a big performance at the MTV VMAs; the internet is now awash in pieces about her “resurrection”. And, because it is illegal for any celebrity to do something of note without a skit from James Corden and/or Jimmy Fallon, she’s just dropped by The Late Late Show for her first Carpool Karaoke.

Spears spends the segment telling Corden about giving up on men, french kissing, and tickling fetishes before singing ‘Oops I Did It Again’, ‘Womaniser’, ‘Make Me’, ‘Toxic’, ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’. If this is a taster of the Spears-mania that’s to come, I’m totally on board.
