From the stunning costumes to the amazing performances and the unapologetic way in which it explores the traumatic effects of colonialism and racism, there’s a lot going on in Marvel’s Black Panther. So much so, in fact, that director Ryan Coogler managed to squeeze in a fairly major celebrity cameo and fans are only now beginning to notice.

Turns out Coogler recruited Trevor Noah, the South African host of The Daily Show, to voice the AI in a Wakandan airship piloted by Martin Freeman’s Agent Ross during the film’s climactic action sequence. The fact that it’s only his voice maybe explains why it took people so long to cotton on.

Noah has been full of praise for the superhero movie, particularly the way it embraces African culture. “It was extra special for me because the people speak Xhosa in the movie,” he told his audience shortly after the film was released. “There were subtitles, and I was like, I don’t need your subtitles! I don’t need your subtitles! This is just for me right now! Nobody else listen!”

He also said the female characters reminded him of his mother. “Every single woman in that movie is like a badass African woman kicking ass, taking names… I was a little bit traumatised because I remember my mum beating my ass.”

You can watch (or rather listen) to Noah’s part in Black Panther below.
