Comedy music trio the Axis of Awesome have a busy few months ahead of them — their new album Viva La Vida Loca Las Vegas dropped today, they’ve got a run of shows across Australia and New Zealand lined up, and lead singer Jordan Raskopoulos’ video game comedy side project Insert Coin has been churning out video sketches at an impressive rate.

But before getting stuck into the year proper, Raskopoulos has taken a moment to talk about something a little more personal. In a video titled ‘What Happened To Jordan’s Beard?’ released on the Axis of Awesome Facebook page this morning, Raskopoulos has revealed that she is a transgender woman, currently undergoing a transition process.

“Gender dysphoria is something I can remember dealing with ever since I was a kid. But I learned early on to be ashamed of it, and to keep it a secret, and I did a really, really good job of hiding it from everybody, including myself in a lot of ways,” Raskopoulos said.

“Being trans doesn’t mean you have to give up on your life, or your friends, or your family, or your career, or your achievements. I’m going to continue doing exactly what I was doing before, and I’m going to be fucking awesome.”

Raskopoulos has written a number of pieces on the transition process for Junkee over the last year under the pseudonym Nicola Fierce. She’s also interviewed Jeffrey Tambor, the star of Transparent, and written op-eds on the appropriateness or otherwise of Caitlyn Jenner’s status as the go-to face of transgender people in wider culture.

Go well, Jordan.
