Last night, A-League champions Sydney FC took on Liverpool in an exhibition match at ANZ stadium. It was a fairly lacklustre game to be honest, with the visitors cruising to an easy 3-0 victory. But the real winner was anyone who tuned into the halftime broadcast on ABC2.

Perhaps inspired by the fact that there was nothing actually riding on the outcome of the contest, the network took… let’s call it a more casual approach to their coverage. Before kickoff, comedians Jules Schiller, Tegan Higginbotham and Steen Raskopoulos previewed the game using whiteboards and cardboard cutouts of the players’ faces.

Sports coverage

Complicated stuff.

But the highlight came at halftime, when the ABC2 team crossed live to their pitchside reporter, the professionally awkward Aaron Chen.

“Oh my gosh, it’s going so crazy,” said Chen in front of a stand full of Sydney fans. “These are some of the wildest dudes I’ve ever met.

“Look at this guy!” he added, pointing to a child.

Insisting that he was “possessed by the spirit of football,” Chen proceeded to baffle the crowd, asking one young fan which side would win in a game of UFC before whipping off his Sydney jersey to reveal an American football t-shirt underneath.

“Oh no. We did it again. I ruined everyone’s life,” he deadpanned. “They wanted me to keep the Sydney FC shirt on but it’s about football today. You can’t stop me. I love football.”

It was glorious.

Now admittedly, not everyone was as entertained by the broadcast as I was, with a number of soccer diehards taking to social media to express their displeasure.

Fortunately, it seems as though Chen was able to take the criticism in stride.
