Trying to figure out what to do with yourself in between episodes? There’s more than enough similarly binge-worthy television to tide you over.

Reclaim your groove in the couch and settle in for the long haul. These six shows –all created by HBO – will ensure that the next week flies by.

Big Little Lies

What sounds like a time worn premise – strip the layers off a sparkling, idyllic coastal town to reveal the sex, secrets, grime and crime beneath – gets a slick revamp in this mini-series, adapted from a Liane Moriarty novel. Our fave gals Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley star as “the mothers of Monterey”, navigating the perils of friendship, parenting, marriage, sex and a murder that rocks the whole town.

Good news for anyone who’s already binged – rumours about a season two might just be true.

Westworld

If you’ve seen the 1973 film of the same name upon which the Westworld series is based, you’ll know it has all the makings of a highly addictive TV show. Stunning production and set design that blends trademark American frontier style with sleek, futuristic sci-fi; fast-evolving robots who’re too smart for their own good, and Anthony Hopkins, who takes ‘playing god’ a bit too seriously. Westworld isn’t your average theme park, that’s for sure.

High Maintenance

High Maintenance confirms what we’ve all suspected for years – drug dealers see and hear A LOT of things, and they 100% don’t care about your life story. The show follows a nameless weed dealer as he visits his clients in New York, and the audience is treated to little snapshot of an endlessly intriguing city at a moment in time. Through the dealers eyes and ears, we hear mundane stories, stumble across surprises, and get to know the people who call New York home.

Insecure

Written by Issa Rae (who also wrote The New York Times bestseller The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl in 2015),this this semi-autobiographical comedy explores the modern black experience. Like all the great small-scale sitcoms (Louie, Curb Your Enthusiasm), Insecure delights in making the audience feel protagonist Issa’s pain in the funniest way possible. Don’t expect major twists or grand ideas, do expect sincere and insightful characterisation, plenty of foibles and a whole bunch of lols. Season two of Insecure starts on Foxtel on 24 July

The Leftovers

If 140 million people suddenly left Earth without a trace for an inexplicable reason, what would happen to those left behind? That’s the premise of The Leftovers, a thought-provoking drama that focuses on a group of people in New York struggling to come to terms with a cataclysmic event. Part sci-fi, part supernatural thriller, part relationship drama, The Leftovers will hook you in from episode one.

Veep

Any show starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus deserves a serious amount of attention, so the fact that Veep is a highly relevant, hilarious and satirical look at the, er, questionable state of American politics is really the icing on the cake. Louis-Dreyfus plays Vice President Selina Meyer in this hit comedy series following her day-to-day existence in the face of political fires, conflicting interests and idiotic behaviour. Mostly though, we just love you, Elaine.
