There are two universally acknowledged truths about students: they love money and they want to make more of it.

What’s that? It’s a universally acknowledged truth about everyone in the whole world? True. But the one thing us students have on our side that cash-raking stockbrokers don’t, is time. We can afford to experiment, try things out and spend our afternoons walking other people’s dogs (more on that later).

Put the time to your advantage. Check out these side hustles that’ll get you cashed up without hardly lifting a finger.

#1 Babysitting

Don’t be put off by the idea of wiping the faces of snotty nosed children. Babysitting is an extremely lucrative side hustle that only requires a minimum amount of work.

All you need is a basic understanding of childcare (feed them, play with them, keep them breathing) and away you go. Depending on the age of the children, you’ll probably only need to entertain them for a few hours before putting them to bed. Then you can spend the rest of your night catching up on your readings, doing some assignments or – let’s be real – watching Netflix.

If you’re worried about a lack of experience, ask around your extended family to see if you can babysit your little cousins for practice. Then tell them to tell their friends, and their friends, etc.

#2 Tutor

You went to high school, right? And you learned English and/or Maths? Great! You can be a tutor.

High school tutoring is a genuinely rewarding – and time efficient – way of earning a few extra dollars. You only have to put in a couple of hours a week, meaning you can fit your shifts between classes and work.

It’ll also make you feel genuinely warm inside to watch children solve problems. O captain, my captain! *wipes away a single tear*

#3 Dog Walking

This one is a no-brainer. Lots of people have dogs but hardly anyone has time to walk them. This is where you and your Very Good Dog Walking Business™ comes in.

Not only do you get to hang out with good doggies (!!!) and make a bit of cash, you’ll be getting your daily dose of exercise too. Honestly, this side hustle is so good it sounds like a scam. But it’s not. (Which may make it the perfect scam…)

Ask around your neighbourhood or put an ad out on Airtasker to see if anyone’s interested. Easy peasy.

#4 House Sitting

House sitting is a money-making situation that benefits you as much as anyone else. Which is the ultimate money making situation, tbh. The majority of us are still living at home with our parents, so any reprieve from their constant nagging would be great. Also, house sitting is just watering plants and being there. You literally do it in your sleep.

House sitting is quite easy to get involved with too, with websites like Aussie House Sitters and House Sitting Australia doing a lot of the legwork for you.

#5 Selling Random Stuff

You’d be surprised at the stuff people will pay money for. Here’s a thing that entrepreneurs know but other people probably don’t: everyone just wants their lives to be a teensy bit easier. If you give buyers a solution, they’ll pay any sort of money for it. We’re pretty sure that’s a direct quote from the Entrepreneur’s handbook* (*don’t… trust us on that).

Think of what you enjoy doing and see if you can make a buck from your creations. You’re into op-shopping? Buy a whole bunch of vintage finds and resell them at a profit. You like candles? Make a whole stack of your own and resell them at a profit. You paint? Paint and profit.

Or resell old clothes, boots, books and paintings. One person’s trash, remember?

Setting up an Etsy or eBay account is surprisingly easy. Make a cute brand logo on Canva and get selling your shit.

Mo’ money, mo’ happiness we say. Cha ching!
