Watchmen, the acclaimed graphic novel by Alan Moore, has a fanbase that could probably be best described as cultish. And it’s easy to understand why. A massive, dense text that deconstructs superheroes, reimagines the Cold War, unpacks toxic masculinity and redefines what the graphic novel is capable of, it’s the kind of book that you could structure your entire personality around.

Well, now newcomers and old Moore-heads alike have an opportunity to immerse themselves once again in the Watchmen world, because a new HBO adaptation, helmed by Damon “Lost” Lindelof, is heading to our TV screens. Notably, the series isn’t a straight adaptation of the Moore comic; rather, it’s a “remix” that takes place after the original story.

Check out the first teaser trailer, below.

The teaser is scant on details, but Watchmen fans will recognise quite a lot of what’s going on. Though it hasn’t been announced, Jeremy Irons is clearly playing Ozymandias, the haught superhero who drives much of the original comic book (that’s him floating above the table in the trailer). It’s also pretty clear that Rorschach, the gruff protagonist of Moore’s work, has inspired a new wave of imitators, a cult that seem to be going after cops and (maybe?) threatening the end the world. Hey, that might even be Rorschach wandering around the trailer with a silver mask — him or one of his imitators.

Anyway, if all that sounded like word salad to you, then you clearly haven’t read Watchmen. Now’s your time to catch up on an all-time classic.

Watchmen doesn’t have a premiere date, but given we now have a trailer, it’ll probably be pretty soon.
