After Two Years Lying Low, Daft Punk Are Back In The Studio
A project is now on the way with The Weeknd.
The last time we properly saw Daft Punk was on stage at the 2014 Grammy Awards, where the duo performed Get Lucky and won big in multiple categories. Now, thanks to a surprise revelation from Republic Records’ executive VP and head of urban A&R Wendy Goldstein, we know the robots are active again.
In a recent ‘Hitmakers Roundtable’ video from Billboard, Goldstein casually dropped the news that Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo are in the studio with crossover R&B star The Weeknd.
The panel of label executives and songwriters was asked which artists they’d most want to work with. “Actually, we have a session coming up in two days, with The Weeknd and Daft Punk,” Goldstein said. “I’ve always been a massive Daft Punk fan, and this is the first time that I’ve actually been involved with an artist who’s going to go and work with them.”
Unfortunately, this tidbit doesn’t mean Daft Punk is working on its follow-up to Random Access Memories. The collaboration is likely to turn up on The Weeknd’s next album, which follows 2015’s Beauty Behind the Madness. The Weeknd recently posted a photo of Daft Punk figurines sitting on a speaker, following it up with a snap of himself standing alongside Norwegian bass wizard Cashmere Cat in the studio.
This of course wouldn’t be the first time Daft Punk have helped out a chart-topping star in the studio. Back in 2013, ahead of Random Access Memories, the duo played a central role in the production for Kanye West’s album Yeezus. Their work on tracks including Black Skinhead and I Am a God had a raw, visceral edge that didn’t come out on their own disco-indebted album. Adding to the symmetry, Cashmere Cat co-producedWolves from Kanye’s most recent album The Life of Pablo.
This Daft Punk diehards might’ve preferred news of a tour or an album in development, it’s good to know Thomas and Guy-Man haven’t decided to disappear.
