Let’s not beat around the bush — things are bleak this week.

Actually, things have been pretty bleak for a while — but the two-pronged assault of the horrifying IPCC report and the knowledge that lockdowns on the east coast (particularly in Sydney) are nowhere near being over has made for a particularly lacklustre couple of days.

The memories of the beforetimes seem to get fuzzier with each day — videos of festivals and gigs gone by seem like they’re from an entirely different world, because they are, really.

So it’s not really a surprise that a clip of Two Door Cinema Club has gone bananas on TikTok. The video, which has racked up hundreds of thousands of views, is taken from their set at Reading Festival in 2017 — specifically, the moment when they crack into their beloved ‘What You Know’ riff.

It’s potent: You can almost feel the tension in the crowd as they wait for the guitar to hit, you can feel the sweat, smell the sickly drinks. You’ve been here before, just watch:

It’s actually the second time during the pandemic that a clip of TDCC has gone viral on the app — last year, a similar vid from their 2011 Reading Set landed on everyone’s For You page:

Clearly, that’s what we’re craving — memories of the world that has seemingly slipped away from us, and may not return in the way we want it to.

Of course, it’s also just another example of Gen Zers on TikTok being strangely obsessed with “millennial music” — which is simply too confounding to contemplate.

You can watch Two Door Cinema Club’s full 2017 Reading set below. They’re gearing up to play Leeds and Reading festivals in a couple of weeks time — a fact that feels unbelievable for us in Australia.
