Desperate times call for desperate measures, which goes some way to explaining why US President Donald Trump would reach out to Australia’s own Scott Morrison for help with the FBI probe against him.

Of course, there’s another reason for Trump’s scrabbling. The probe against the President, relating to his alleged contact with Russian officials leading up to the 2016 election, was kicked off, weirdly enough, by our country’s own Alexander Downer.

It was Downer who contacted high-ranking members of the US government with the news that the Trump camp’s foreign policy aide George Papadopoulos had told him that they had “dirt” on Hilary Clinton. In turn, Downer’s tip prompted a full-scale investigation, one that Trump has attempted to coolly and smoothly deal with by being extremely online about it.

That investigation has officially closed — Robert Mueller, who spearheaded the probe, released his lengthy report earlier this year. But the stink around Trump has not. In fact, official impeachment proceedings have just opened up against the President over a recent phone call that he made with the Ukranian president, urging him to investigate Democratic hopeful Joe Biden and his son, presumably to find dirt he could use in the 2020 election.

Desperately trying to shout at this problem enough that it all goes away, Trump called Morrison and asked him to help.

Essentially, the President wants Morrison to co-operate with a review of the Mueller enquiry, spearheaded by his attorney general William Barr, and to provide evidence concerning Downer’s involvement in it. Trump has publicly spoken about his desire that the review will gather evidence about what he calls a “hoax”; the help he is looking for from Morrison presumably involves discrediting Downer’s initial information, though nobody’s actually explicitly said that yet.

Anyway, because our Prime Minister is a massively unpopular and weak-willed coward, desperate for support and affection literally anywhere he can get it, he said yes.

“The Australian Government has always been ready to assist and cooperate with efforts that help shed further light on the matters under investigation,” a government spokesperson confirmed to the ABC.

The spokesperson also noted that Morrison “confirmed this readiness once again in conversation with the President.”

So there’s a fun conversation for you to imagine.
