If 2020 has proved one thing, it’s that time doesn’t really exist, so it seems more than fitting that predictions for 2020’s Hottest 100 are already beginning to roll in halfway through the year.

No matter that we have six months of music awaiting us. As reported by the good folks over at Pilerats, the triple j subreddit is already getting hard at work on selecting what might make the countdown.

Usually, we might be tempted to call such investigative work premature. But 2020 has seen the music industry so thoroughly disrupted, that it’s entirely likely that we’ll be getting much less music throughout the next six months. Certainly, some of the biggest musicians in the country are delaying albums, reconsidering their writing schedule, and taking an entirely new approach to the usual churn.

Then there’s the rigorous method that the subredditors have applied to their work. Folks over on that board have compiled a list of all of the songs included in publicly accessible Hottest 100 playlists on Spotify, and then worked out which of those songs are in turn the most popular.

Basically, they’ve taken something of a similar approach to 100 Warm Tunas,  the music aggregate site that guesses which songs might top the poll by processing publicly posted votes on Twitter.

And hey, the list seems pretty sturdy too.

Right at the top is ‘Energy ‘, a bop by Stace Cadet & KLP. Then, there’s the newest track by beloved Australian institution The Avalanches, and their song ‘Running Red Lights’. After that, it’s ‘Sending Me Ur Loving’ by The Jungle Giants, ‘On Our Own’ by Lime Cordiale, ‘death bed (coffee for your head)’ by Powfu, and Flume’s massive ‘The Difference’.

After that, there’s The Rubens with ‘Heavy Weather’, Tash Sultana with ‘Pretty Lady’, merci, mercy with ‘Fucked Myself Up’, G Flip with ‘Hyperfine’, BRONSON with ‘Heart Attack’, Hilltop Hoods with ‘I’m Good?’, Azure Ryder with ‘Dizzy’, FISHER with ‘Freaks’, Glass Animals with ‘Your Love (Déjà Vu)’ and Duke Dumont with ‘Love Song’.

Needless to say, Flume is something of a lock. He’s a Hottest 100 staple, and his new single ‘The Difference’ has been literally everywhere. As to the other songs, things might change before the end of the year. But ya never know. Seems like a sensible list to us.
