If you just had a newborn around the time that Tool started to discuss plans for their fifth studio album, that child would now be just about to celebrate their twelth birthday.

That is because Manyard James Keenan, God bless his heart, is a big old fibber. The Tool frontman did warn fans that the band were going to take a bit of a hiatus way back in 2008, but that hiatus barely seemed designed to last — even as he announced that the group was going to relax away from the spotlight, he was already talking about the idea of them shooting their own wacky movie (no, seriously.)

He also promised that the group had already written some new material, a promise that was repeated on and off again over the next 11 agonising years, while the band claimed that it was those nebulous old “family commitments” that were keeping them from returning into their desperate fans’ lives.

In 2013, the band promised fans that the album was going to drop in early 2014. When that date came and went, a new one was announced — apparently the record was going to finally make its way into our lives in 2018. That 2018 date was the most concrete of them all — Keenan claimed that it was “definitely” getting released then, But, needless to say, that turned out to be yet another fib.

Now, save the end of the world or some shit, a new Tool record is absolutely, one hundred per cent dropping this August 30. Tool promises.

Of course, because this is Tool, that’s about all the information we’ll have to make do with for the next little while. Oh well. At least we’ve got some shakily recorded footage of a new song to tide us over until something real drops, which, fingers crossed, will be within the month.
