Netflix is continuing to tantalise us with its first-ever Australian-made original seriesTidelands, and has dropped a full-length trailer. And it’s looking extremely cool.

The show is set in the fictional coastal community of Orphelin Bay and follows ex-convict Cal McTeer (played by Charlotte Best) who returns home only to become embroiled in the world of “Tidelanders”, mysterious Siren-like creatures led by Adrielle (Elsa Pataky), who share the town with its human population.

When the body of a local fisherman washes ashore, the town’s clandestine relationship with drug smuggling is suddenly on public display. Cal must uncover the town’s well-hidden secrets while investigating the sexy and dangerous half-Siren / half-human Tidelanders.

It looks sexy and mysterious and lush — almost the opposite of every experience I’ve ever had in a small coastal Australian town. But you never know, there might be a B-storyline revolving around the meat-tray scandal at the local RSL, and a long lingering scene where a character tries to buy fish and chips in a speedo.

Personally, I’m all here for Netflix to grittily reboot Ocean Girl, and hope they move on to Ship To Shore next, with a kind of Lord of the Flies twist.

Anyway! Watch the trailer here. Tidelands comes to Netflix on December 14th.
