This is O’Neil. He is an 18-month-old yellow lab training to be a guide dog. He is a good boy.

On Monday in San Rafael, California, O’Neil was being walked by two trainers for Guide Dogs for the Blind: Todd Jurek and Danielle Alvarado. Alvarado was blindfolded, and Jurek was spotting her, when the dog quickly turned around to look behind him.

Jurek noticed the dog’s strange movements, and looked back too. This is what they saw coming.

The car was being driven by a 93-year-old woman. After Jurek, Alvarado and O’Neil ran out of the way, she hit a city bench and a stop light, lost a car door, and then came to a break. No one was injured.

O’Neil underwent more training and testing the next day, to make sure he wasn’t traumatised; he’s in the middle of his final testing, and within the next two to three weeks he will be protecting a human.
