‘The Mandalorian’ S2E2 Recap: The Child Causes Trouble By Eating Lots Of Alien Eggs

'The Mandalorian' reminds us that the Child may be cute, but he’s not exactly as innocent as a baby.

"The Mandalorian" season two is streaming now, only on Disney+

I’m conflicted: on one hand, the Child really shouldn’t eat the eggs that the Mandalorian is risking their lives to transport. On the other, the Child really wants to eat the eggs, and it’s hard to argue with that.

This article contains spoilers for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2, so please be careful if you haven’t seen it yet!

In true Taurus fashion (it’s not canon, but it should be), the Child spent most of this episode trying to eat things that didn’t belong to him. This week’s monsters were far more fearsome than the giant dragon from the season 2 premiere and pushed this episode into true terror.

Exhilarating, funny, and featuring a whole lot more Baby Yoda, this episode had a lot to offer. Here’s everything that happened in episode 2 of The Mandalorian, ‘The Passenger’.

A Frog Lady Needs Help

We return to Mando as he’s racing a speeder bike across Tatooine after his adventure with the Marshal in episode 1.

He reunites with Peli Motto (Amy Sedaris), who’s playing a game of cards with an ant creature (a cute nod to Peyton Reed, who directed both this episode and Marvel’s Ant-Man films). Coincidentally, this ant knows someone who knows about another Mandalorian.

Peli strikes a deal with Mando as her droids cook up a (medium-rare) piece of the dragon meat he saved for her, and the Child looks on with hunger: evidently, by his appetite this episode, he’s a growing boy. Peli will pass on the ant’s contact if Mando helps transport a Frog Lady – literally what she’s called all episode – and her precious eggs.

“This is my friend I was telling you about!”

Naturally, they can’t just make a quick jump to hyperspace to reach their destination, or the eggs will be, uh, scrambled. Mando’s not into the idea of travelling at sub-speed, given how many people are looking for him and the Child out there, but he has no choice.

And The Child Needs A Snack

Mando can’t understand Frog Lady, which makes for an awkward, funny trip. Meanwhile, the Child’s downstairs sucking in as many eggs as he can, prompting Mando to play bad cop and literally finger wag and shout “no!” at him.

Me pretending I will just have one tiny piece of chocolate, knowing full well the whole block will be gone in two minutes.

Trouble soon finds them when two X-wing pilots fly alongside Mando. On the brink of being arrested, he tries to fly away after failing to pretend his radio doesn’t work: he’s not a great liar, but he is a good pilot and loses them on a frozen planet.

Unfortunately, he hides his ship on a shaky ice-shelf that gives way, wrecking the ship and leaving the gang stranded underground. While Mando repairs the ship, the Frog Lady finds a hot spring to relax in. There, a hangry Child finds a field of new eggs to eat – an image that will chill anyone who has seen Aliens.

Turns out, the eggs belong to an eight-legged creature living in the caves, who doesn’t take kindly to the Child snacking on their children. A terrifying chase back to the ship ensures and, just when it looks like all hope is lost, in come the two X-wing pilots in a blaze of glory.

After they save the day, our lucky-to-be-alive trio continues their adventure. Frog Lady, noticing some eggs are gone, holds the rest of them close and eyes off the Child, and we’re reminded that he may be cute, but he’s not exactly as innocent as a baby.
