‘The Crimes Of Grindelwald’ Has Been Avada Kedavra’d At The Box-Office
Accio money!
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald has failed to live up to its more successful brethren in the Harry Potter universe in the only way that matters: dollars and cents, baby.
According to the people who notice these things and studio estimates, The Crimes of Grindelwald premiered at the weekend box office with a $62.2 million opening in the U.S. and Canada.
This means the film falls short of the opening of its predecessor, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, which debuted with $74 million in 2016, and went on to earn $234 million in the U.S. and Canada.
This also means that it’s had the lowest domestic debut of any film in the Harry Potter Wizarding World.
Box office: With an estimated $62.2M, #TheCrimesOfGrindelwald had the lowest domestic debut of any film in the Harry Potter Wizarding World.
Its $191M international debut, however, is among the strongest in the mega-franchise, so the film has already made $253.2M worldwide. pic.twitter.com/lMFMxRxFnD

The Crimes Of Grindelwald has been fraught with controversies, including the casting of alleged abuser Johnny Depp. It’s also managed to score itself some truly brutal reviews from critics, who have complained that the film is overly complicated, with too many characters. Also, it’s been making some weird decisions with the official canon.
But it’s not all grim news for The Crimes of Grindelwald, because despite performing poorly domestically, it’s done well internationally with a $191M international debut. This means it’s already made $253.2M worldwide.
