It’s been a rough couple of decades for the Terminator franchise. After the one-two punch of The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, each subsequent sequel has been a bigger embarrassment than the last. But we’re holding out hope for the latest entry in the saga, which brings back one of the key elements that made the first two films so great: Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor.

Terminator: Dark Fate is billed as a direct sequel to T2, effectively retconning Sarah’s death, which occurred off-screen between Judgement Day and Rise of the Machines. In this version of the timeline, she’s alive and kicking, and knows a thing or two about the business end of a bazooka.

The trailer also introduces us to a new human-terminator hybrid (Mackenzie Davis) tasked with protecting a young woman (Natalie Reyes) from yet another liquid-metal assassin (Gabriel Luna). It’s not yet clear what the connection is between these characters and the Connor clan, with the future leader of the resistance John Connor notably absent.

Oh, and the original Terminator is now an old man who lives in a cabin in the woods. Sure, okay!

Terminator: Dark Fate hits cinemas in Australia on October 31, 2019.
