Miss Americana is a Netflix documentary chronicling a year in the life of Taylor Swift. But it’s more than that too.

Unlike a lot of other pop star documentaries — many of which can be reductive, uniformly glowing Wikipedia entries — Miss Americana was designed to be an honest look at fame. This isn’t a film that paints a portrait of its star that’s so effusive it ends up telling you nothing at all. As early interviews have revealed, Miss Americana is a chronicle of defeat, and what we do when we are defeated.

To that end, the first look at the Netflix documentary is heavy on the drama. Opening with Swift telling cameras that she’s spent her whole life being instructed to be silent, the trailer then outlines the megastar’s haters and their criticisms, flashing through years of scorn she’s suffered from members of the American media.

Throw in scenes where Swift hangs out with Brendon Urie, cries, swears, and jumps about the place in a pair of light-up shoes, and it’s clear this won’t be your average pop star documentary.

Miss Americana premieres at the Sundance film festival this week, so we’ll find out what critics think of it very soon.

The film drops in full on Netflix on January 31. Watch the trailer here:
