I Just Wanna Stay In That Lavender Haze
Taylor Swift invented purple. There, I said it.
Life feels exponentially less exciting when you don’t have a crush and right now, my crush is on a very, very specific shade of purple — I simply wanna kiss it on the face. It’s like when you’re so overwhelmed by a cat’s cuteness that you kinda wanna squish it (but you don’t tell anyone, for fear that you’re on your own, kid).
I need to be clear, I am not talking about Pantone’s 2022 colour of the year ‘Very Peri’ – get that dusty, desaturated mess off my desk. The colour I have a severe crush on is the prettiest pale lavender shade you ever did see — an ethereal fairy princess purple that I wanna be wrapped in, while listening to sugary, glittery pop music.
Taylor Swift is probably to blame, if I’m honest. When Taylor released her 10th studio album Midnights, I was down bad for Track 1. ‘Lavender Haze’ was on repeat for weeks, falling deeper and deeper into the love spiral. The obsession with lavender continued post-announcement of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) — specifically the photoshoot for the back cover of the album.
And the purple looks for The Eras Tour have been positively elite. I reckon I’ve seen every angle of the tour thanks to TikTok, but it’s the ‘Lavender Haze’ furry coat and the Speak Now era princess dress that do it for me, babe.
I can trace my crush back to the very moment that we were blessed with the iconic music video for ‘Lavender Haze’. The lavender growing out of the carpet, the smoky clouds, the koi fish swimming around, the purple pool — it was clear in that moment that I couldn’t rest until I was immersed in that world. I wanted to swim!!! In liquid lavender!!! Just like Taylor Swift!!!
I recalled once having a very pretty lavender cocktail at a rogue event where I was someone’s plus one. Truly, I don’t remember much of the event, but I do remember thinking… I could simply bathe in this. But based on my failed attempt at recreating it, it’s clear that I’m severely lacking in the mixologist department. Have you ever tried making your own lavender syrup? Fucking difficult. Sticky. The absolute worst. You forget who you are and what you’re doing on this planet.
So to save what’s left of my sanity and ultimately fulfil my dream of swimming in my favourite colour, I will alternatively pour a four-pack of Smirnoff’s Lavender Lemonade into a bath and splash around happily. It’s giving ‘Bejeweled’ music vid with Taylor Swift and Dita Von Teese in giant martini glasses. Could be me!
