Word has it that Sydney isn’t very welcoming to new blood, as a new study has ranked it the third worst city on the planet to make friends.

The sobering news comes via researchers at Time Out, who quizzed about 20,000 people living in cities all over the world. Three quarters of Sydney’s respondents reckon making new friends there was “either hard or impossible”.

The city comes behind The worst city in the world for making new friends is apparently the Swedish capital of Stockholm, with Copenhagen coming in second, so bad time to live in Scandinavia.

Unsurprisingly, Sydney’s nightlife was also ranked the second-worst in the world, which may reflect a hangover from the city’s lockout laws, which were scrapped in 2020.

If that weren’t enough, the research also suggests it’s a loveless place! A whopping 71 percent of those who were surveyed said that hooking up in Sydney also doesn’t come easy. Give a girl (Sydney) a break!

To be fair, all of these rankings are based on what people living in these cities think, and as an outsider to the unofficial capital, I’ve noticed that Sydneysiders seem much more self-hating than, say, Melburnians, who have a tendency to claim stuff like “Melbourne is a world-class city” without warning and at any time.

So while Time Out reckons that Melbourne is the 15th best city in the world and Sydney is 46th, I’m sure this is more to do with Melbourne residents having more pride in their city than Sydney folk do.

As for why this is the case? We’ll have to mull on that one.
