After nine breathtaking episodes, the Season 3 finale of Succession has shown us all, once again, why it is one of the best show on television. Last night’s episode was a gut-punch for a whole number of reasons, and what better way to celebrate and commiserate the plight of the Roy siblings than with some choice memes?

— Warning: Spoilers ahead! You have been warned! —

Episode nine, All The Bells Say, was Succession’s red wedding in all but name. As the Roy siblings and associates gathered for their mother’s nuptials, Logan, their ever malevolent patriarch, made moves to sell Waystar Royco to tech company GoJo behind his children’s backs.

After a season of holding metaphorical daggers at one another’s throats, Shiv, Roman and Kendall abandoned their sibling rivalry and banded together. Armed with the supermajority power on Waystar Royco’s board that their mother won in divorcing Logan, the trio believed they had enough ammunition to finally stand up to their father and stop him from selling their empire out from under them.

Following three seasons of ‘Daddy wants me to be CEO more than you’, the three Roys had even reached an agreement on which of them would have the title if they successfully ousted their father. But it wasn’t to be.

Upon arriving at the lavish Italian villa serving as their father’s base of operations, Shiv, Roman, and Kendall revealed their intention to oust him from the company. But in typical Logan Roy fashion, the malevolent mogul is four moves ahead of his children.

In a series of gut-wrenching betrayals, Logan calls the trio’s mother, Caroline, and she says they’ve revised their prior divorce settlement. The three siblings no longer have a guaranteed supermajority on Waystar’s board and have no power to prevent the sale. Demoralised, heartbroken, and powerless to prevent their world from shrinking around them, Shiv and her brothers also realise that it was her husband Tom who told their father they were coming.

The season ends with an unforgettable close-up of the wrath on Shiv’s face as her traitorous husband kisses her forehead. It’s no wonder Succession has earned itself all those golden globe nominations.

The episode floored Succession fans — but at least we have a shit-tonne of great memes to console ourselves with.
