If you wanted to feel old, Blue’s Clues is now officially 25 years old. And if you wanted to feel sad, it’s been 19 years since the iconic Steve departed the show and changed millennials’ lives forever.

But to heal old wounds, Steve has now reached out to the now-adult fans who were still missing him to apologise for ghosting all of us back in 2002.

Posting a two-minute long video to the Nick Jr. Twitter account, Steve Burns donned his famous green-striped shirt to let Blue’s Clues fans know why he suddenly up and left the show all those years ago. The answer? Turns out it really was college that took Steve from us, and not addiction or a car accident like rumours suggested.

“You remember how when we were younger we used to run around with Blue and find clues and talk to Mr. Salt and freak out about the mail and do all the fun stuff?” Steve started his video, acknowledging that his exit from the show was “kind of abrupt”.

“And then one day I was like, ‘Oh hey, guess what? Big news … I’m leaving. This is my brother Joe. He’s your new best friend.’ And then I got on a bus and I left and we didn’t see each other for like a really long time. Can we just talk about that?”

“I realise that was kind of abrupt,” Steve continued. “I just kinda got up and went to college… I got to use my mind and take a step at a time and now I literally am doing many of the things that I wanted to do.”

Then Steve turned his attention on his now-adult fans, who have also grown up in the time since he was last on the show.

“And look at you. Look at all you have done and all you have accomplished in all that time. And it’s just… it’s just so amazing, right?” Steve said. “I mean, we started out with clues and now it’s what? Student loans, and jobs, and families and some of it has been kind of hard, you know?

“I wanted to tell you that I really couldn’t have done all of that without your help,” Steve ended his heartfelt message. “I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years, I never forgot you… ever. And I’m super glad we’re still friends.”

Unsurprisingly, Steve’s message struck a chord with the millennials who grew up watching him. With the world so full of doom and gloom it’s only natural that people have clung to Steve’s message, with emotional reactions flooding Twitter and the video being liked over 1.7 million times in the last day.

And sure, while parasocial (one-sided) relationships might not be the healthiest connections ever, millennials agree we can always make an exception for the king, Steve from Blue’s Clues.

So here are all the best reactions to Steve’s emotional comeback:

Never leave us again, Steve. Please.
