We Can Guess What Kind Of Student You Are Based On Your Favourite Music Genre

Prepare to feel seen.

Brought to you by Spotify

Spotify Premium is half-price for students, compared to the price of Premium Individual.

There’s nothing like indulging in a good personality test, astrological reading, natal chart analysis, or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to get you feeling introspective. But everyone knows that there’s no greater insight into your personality than your taste in music.

In fact, it’s possible to deduce exactly what kind of student you are based solely on the tracks, playlists, and genres you spin the most. So let’s do it. We’ve divided students into a collection of niche stereotypes, categorised by music genre, and now you can road test our innovative anthropological theory. It’s bound to be at least as accurate as star sign memes, which somehow always seem… unsettlingly accurate.

The unavoidable truth is that what you listen to is crucial to who you are. It’s also crucial to getting you through the day – especially when you’re a student. Which is why it’s truly a blessing that higher education students can get Spotify Premium for half the price (T&Cs apply) of Premium Individual. To survive student life you need those premium perks, so sign up for Spotify Premium for Students to get one month free if you’re new to Premium and only $5.99 a month after that.

In the meantime, let us surmise exactly what kind of student you are according to your favourite music genre. This is some insightful, high-level science going down here, so prepare to be seen.

#1 EDM

No surprises here: if you’re a fiend for electronic dance music then, nine times out of ten, you’re the student that spends more time partying than doing actual coursework. You’ve mastered the art of getting through class while feeling severely dusty, even though the bass line is still pulsing in your ears.

#2 Hip Hop

If you were on Spotify Premium, all your personalised playlists would be full of Cardi B, Drake, Megan Thee Stallion, Da Baby – the list goes on, and it slaps. Does this sound like you? Then you probably always have a spicy level of sass, and no problem dishing it out in class. Plus, you’re regularly showing up late with coffee in hand, and completely unapologetic about it. It’s admirable, really.

#3 Indie

You’re always the student zoned out or semi-napping in class. Maybe because you never listen to music over 80bpm.

#4 Rock

No one ever expects it, but you’re the kid who never studies and somehow always gets good marks anyway. Extra points if you listen to heavy metal rock – you’re probably topping the class. Anyone who can handle that level of intensity in their eardrums can smash a class assignment, no problem.

#5 Jazz

The absentee student. Never comes to class. Believes time is just a construct. Refuses to be restricted to the rigidity of the class schedule. Won’t conform.

#6 K-pop

You’re that perky student who’s involved in all the clubs and co-curricular activities. Catch you at the drama society performance in the morning and on the debating team at night. Not sure where you find the time or the energy, but you’re definitely making the most of student life.

#7 Top Hits

Enthusiastic but unprepared. You are 100 percent that student who has a lot to say in class, even though they didn’t read the set text. No one’s really sure what you’re on about half the time but you’re definitely not too shy to raise your hand. Zero hate intended to the lovers of radio chart toppers! You do you! At least on Spotify Premium you can listen to your Hot 100 music ad-free while you’re probably not reading the set work.

#8 Taylor Swift

Anyone who wants to say that “Taylor Swift isn’t a music genre!” may see themselves out. For you and your crew, TayTay is all you need as you run in packs around campus. Having offline listening enabled on the Taylor Swift Complete Collection playlist is reason enough to get Spotify Premium.

#9 “A bit of everything”

Ah yes, the genreless listener. You thought you could get away uncategorised, but alas, we know you. You’re the student who changed majors at least three times in your first year before landing on a degree you love. You like to shop around, and it pays off in the end.

#10 Emo

Resistant to group work. Tendency towards melodrama in class discussions. Over-invested emotionally in the set text.

#11 Instrumental

If instrumental tracks are your most-listened-to genre, then damn, good on you. You’re an A+ student, laser-focused and dedicated to applying yourself. You probably have absolute bangers like Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons: Spring, queued up for when you inevitably top every class.
