Sia has accused actor Shia LaBeouf of “conning her into an adulterous relationship”, expressing support after FKA Twigs announced she was suing him for “relentless abuse” — sexual, physical and emotional.

Twigs — aka Tahlia Debrett Barrett — filed a lawsuit over the weekend over the alleged abuse inflicted by LaBeouf, who she dated for less than a year between 2018 and 2019. She also starred in Honey Boy, a largely autobiographical film written and starring LaBeouf.

As reported by the New York Times, Twigs’ lawsuit details multiple events of alleged abuse, including an incident where he threatened to crash a car they were in before assaulting her. It also alleges he willingly gave her a STI.

On Instagram, Twigs said she was sharing her story as to help people understand that abusive relationships can happen to anyone.

“It may be surprising to you to learn that I was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship,” she wrote in a caption beneath a screenshot of the NYT article.

“It was hard for me to process too, during and after I never thought something like this would happen to me. Which is why I have decided it’s important for me to talk about it and try to help people understand that when you are under the coercive control of an abuser or in an intimate partner violent relationship leaving doesn’t feel like a safe or achievable option.”

Sia has responded to the NYT article by sharing her own experience with LaBeouf, claiming he is a “pathological liar” and unwell person. It’s unclear when the two were in a relationship, though the actor starred in the music video for 2015 single ‘Elastic Heart’ — she divorced her then-husband Erik Anders Lang in December 2016.

“I too have been hurt emotionally by Shia, a pathological liar, who conned me into an adulterous relationship claiming to be single,” she wrote on Twitter. “I believe he’s very sick and have compassion for him AND his victims. Just know, if you love yourself — stay safe, stay away.”

In the NYT article, another of LaBeouf’s former girlfriends alleged similar instances of abuse, and the article cites a public incident with his then-wife Mia Goth in 2015. In a statement, LaBeouf said that while “many of these allegations are not true”, he said that he is a troubled person with a “history of hurting the people closest to me”.

“I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel,” he told the NYT. “I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalisations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.”
