Sampa The Great has taken out the prestigious Australian Music Prize for the second time, making her the first artist in the nearly two decade-long history of the award to receive the honour twice.

The record, her second, The Return, has been showered with plaudits since it first released in September last year. “If her thousand-yard-stare determination on The Return is any indication, her journey is only beginning,” wrote Pitchfork‘s Marcus J. Moore at the time.

The AMP is judged by 48 prestigious members of the Australian music industry, and awards $30,000 in prize money.

Sampa won the prize the first time in 2017, for her debut release Birds And The BEE9.

In the years between those two awards, the rising star has collaborated with Blinky Bill and Raiza Biza, and has solidified her position at home and abroad as one of the most important voices in hip-hop and pop.

“The fact that I’m able to create my most vulnerable music and have it supported over the years has been amazing,” Sampa said in a press release. “I want to thank the AMP for recognising the music and stories behind The Return.”

Really does just go to show: we live in the world of Sampa The Great, now.
